Getting
Started
My clients say, “These are
my assets, this is my family, what makes sense for me?”
And I say, “Who are you?” Once I know you, I can begin
to answer the question. To what extent I need to know
depends on your circumstances.
For most clients, the
planning process usually takes three of four meetings. The
first meeting is an opportunity for you to get to know me
and for me to get to know you, your goals and your
objectives and there is no charge for this. At this time you
teach me about yourself, in return I’ll teach you about
gift and estate taxes, and then we’ll develop the overview
of a plan for you. Once I know the scope of your plan I can
then quote a fee for its preparation and implementation.
In most instances we find
that the revocable living trust should be the primary
vehicle for the disposition of your wealth. Through this
trust you can express your goals for yourself, your family
and friends and your community. It becomes the foundation
upon which you can base more advanced strategies for the
preservation and transfer of your wealth.
More often than not a new
client is overwhelmed with the possibilities and the choices
that come with those possibilities. How quickly we proceed
is as much a function of how quickly the client can make
decisions as it is a function of how quickly I can work; in
most cases there is usually a three week delay between the
client’s decisions and the signing of the documents that
comprise a fundamental plan.
